Yellowstone Community Raises Enough Money to Open Wyoming Entrances on Time

 

Yellowstone National Park will open on time this spring to visitors coming through the south and east entrances in Wyoming.

Th announcement is the result of a successful local community fundraising effort. The Cody Chamber of Commerce recently announced it has raised $100,000 to enable plowing at the east entrance.

The Jackson town council approved on Monday to plow the south entrance of the park beginning April 8, at a cost of $71,000.

According to officials, the roads passing through the south and east entrances will be clear by the first weekend in May, assuming there are no major weather events between now and then.

Previously, the National Park Service announced the roads would open two weeks late, due to constraints in funding resulting from federal budget cuts. The delay would have resulted in a substantial cost to the local community, who depend on the tourist dollars brought in by park visitors.

Yellowstone National Park and the National Park Service work with local communities to promote historic preservation, civic engagement and outdoor recreation programs. There are also activities for education and recreation that bring tourists every year.

Among the programs, there is a science-learning center with field institutes, including the Teton Science School and Yellowstone Association Institute, which teaches people about the archaeology, ethnography and general history of the park area.

The park also contains museums, which include the Vernon Collection, Trailside Museum, Yellowstone Heritage and Research Center, as well as the Grand Teton Archives.

There are also science and management workshops offered for those more technically inclined, such as one integrating science and park resource management in Chico Hot Springs.

Q: How imminent is an eruption of the Yellowstone Volcano?

A: There is no evidence that a catastrophic eruption at Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is imminent. Current geologic activity at Yellowstone has remained relatively constant since earth scientists first started monitoring some 30 years ago. Though another caldera-forming eruption is theoretically possible, it is very unlikely to occur in the next thousand or even 10,000 years.

The most likely activity would be lava flows such as those that occurred after the last major eruption. Such a lava flow would ooze slowly over months and years, allowing plenty of time for park managers to evaluate the situation and protect people. No scientific evidence indicates such a lava flow will occur soon.

Q: How much advance notice would there be of an eruption?

A: The science of forecasting a volcanic eruption has significantly advanced over the past 25 years. Most scientists think that the buildup preceding a catastrophic eruption would be detectable for weeks and perhaps months to years. Precursors to volcanic eruptions include strong earthquake swarms and rapid ground deformation and typically take place days to weeks before an actual eruption. Scientists at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory* (YVO) closely monitor the Yellowstone region for such precursors. They expect that the buildup to larger eruptions would include intense precursory activity (far exceeding background levels) at multiple spots within the Yellowstone volcano. As at many caldera systems around the world, small earthquakes, ground uplift and subsidence, and gas releases at Yellowstone are commonplace events and do not reflect impending eruptions.

A: The park would communicate accurate and timely information to park visitors, park employees, concessioners, surrounding communities, media outlets, and other interested parties through the park's 24-hour Communications Center; news releases; established emergency response programs; and through notification of appropriate interagency, state and local government agencies.

Q: Where would it be safe to be during an eruption?

A: For the most likely type of volcanic eruption in Yellowstone, everywhere would be safe except in the immediate vicinity of the advancing lava flow. In the highly improbable event of a large catastrophic eruption, the greater the distance from the eruptive center, the safer it would be. It is impossible to know the effects of the eruption without guessing at the explosivity of the highly unlikely eruption and the total amount of the material erupted.

Q: Would the public know about a possible eruption?

Q: If Old Faithful quits erupting, is that a sign the volcano is about to erupt?

A: Geysers are natural phenomena and as such, their behavior is unpredictable and subject to unexpected changes. We expect Old Faithful to change in response to the ongoing geologic processes associated with mineral deposition and earthquakes. Thus, a change in Old Faithful Geyser's eruptions will not necessarily indicate a change in volcanic activity.

We were hungry after fishing late, so i searched with this app. to find a good place to eat. The reviews spoke well, so off we go. We got there at 8:30pm and the (very small) dining room was packed. We were seated at a table on the porch which was fine then since it was still warm. The water brought one glass of water for five adults an one child? A couple minutes later he brought two more. Making progress, but still no menu. After a few more minutes he finally brought the remaining glasses of water and two menu and two kid menus. One for my mom and one for my son?!

He said he would be back in less than a minute. Now folks I don't know what time this fella is on because he came back 15 minutes later to take our order!!! We were just about ready to get up and leave when he came back and took our order. The salads arrived in normal time but we waited a while for the food. I figured that was because it was busy. Our food arrived 50 minutes after we first arrived!!! Way too long for hungry people. The food was not the greatest. He came back with the check and I looked over it and the total was $30-something.

Each plate was $12-something so I went up to pay and told him the total was wrong. I had to show him how to add the total of our meal ($12.95 x 4 + $5 for the kids meal). He got the total and we gave him cash. He didn't know how to count cash and ended up over taking by $5. We didn't care at that point and just wanted to leave. We left him a $5 tip on top of the $5 he took... Oh well. I know these are seasonal employees but this guy left a bad taste in our mouth!

Slow, expensive, average food and below average service. How long does it take 3 cooks to make a bison burger and fries? Long enough for the storm to move in... in other words, too long... I usually eat at Wolf Pack Brewery but they no longer brew their own beer. And I'd eaten there on my vacation going down to Burning Man so I wanted something different coming back. Other than the porch, which was too cold to eat out on, nothing to recommend here. Had to ASK for catchup and extra nappies! No coffee refill. Likely would not eat there again.

and both times have stayed here at the Kelly Inn. I love how close it is to the park and right across the street from the IMAX and Wolf and Grizzly Experience. We paid $160 / night for 2 king beds and a roll away, they were accommodating and helpful. Breakfast was a little crowded 1 of the 3 mornings we were there but still OK. Within walking distance of lots of food and shopping.

I was disappointed. I have a bad back and had booked the room because I thought it would have a comfortable bed. Unfortunately, I did not sleep well at all and got up hurting. The location is excellent and the pool and hot tub were very nice. The room was spacious.

Extremely nice building, but that's where it stops. Food is gross, and I love McDonald's. First day got a 1$sausage burrito for 2.89, and it had a crusty tortilla all other food I got was also gross and expensive... Next day went there at 10:22 waited a minute then started to repeat "hello?" at 10:26 someone said "lunch only." I drove away. This is without question the worst McDonald's I have ever been to.

Can't believe the other complaining whiners! After a day in the wilderness of YNP what could be better than settling in to a wonderfully crusty chicken mcnugget (whatever the heck a mcnugget is) that's been cooked with vintage grease and oil. Eat fries that have been sitting around since Buffalo Bill was a kid in this region. Mmmmm. If travel makes your system irregular, this is the place for you. You'll be doing the squats and enjoying a colon blowing experience after every meal at this Mickey D's. Don't forget to power wash your shoes after walking out of here! They should call this place Athens for all the grease (Greece) in store for you! Happy Gas and Go!

Your hotel only agreed to be as nice once we appreciated. We'd an area looking over the stream. It had been an attractive view. Beds were very comfortable and also the room given everything we would have liked .

Staff were friendly and useful. There's a pleasant clean guest laundry and that we loved the pool and health spa.

The mattress and bedspread were thoroughly decorated with a perforated pleated sheet, overlayed with native animal quilt kind of runner across the base, along with a folded dark blue cushion because the focal point. The area was spotlessly clean everywhere and also the bathroom was diagonal fit with all of amenities arranged across the sink top.

Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. Your places to stay is definitely an old beauty having a warm charm along with a great staff. Our 4th floor room was quiet,airy, and incredibly clean, but didn't have a personal bath that is pretty good for males, but ladies did some waiting.

The area was small, but neat and rustic. Parking can be tough. The northern location is fantastic for going to Lamar Valley not to mention, the gorgeous balconies,pools featuring of Mammoth Springs. Another must is really a short trip the north gate towards the Arch.

This location includes a nice parking area having a short walk to some stone wall and pathway towards the overlooks for excellent shots from the river and Lower and upper Waterfalls. You will find bathrooms only at that location. (You will find several turnouts on the way to determine the website from different sights.) Only at that location there have been ravens within the trees also.

The grand canyon is deep, beautiful colors and also the water is quick. We're able to observe that the trails were on the other hand from the canyon and there have been several groups across the trails walking nearer to the waterfalls. We did not go near that side however the trails were well marked and appeared to appear very stable. The low falls trail was great having a walk lower earth steps. Turnouts around the trail so you can get great shots.

The Evergreen Lodge around West Yellowstone MT for any single evening in the end of Sept 2012. The individually operated rentals are situated on the primary road with great ease of access towards the West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

The Evergreen Lodge provides rooms which are quite small , dark but quiet, neat and orderly. There's very little when it comes to extras, however the coffee at work is excellent, the host and hostess are cordial, along with a evening stay is fully well worth the modest cost. Would we stay again? We may look around, but we'd certainly think about a go back to the Evergreen.
